What if You Talked to Me? I Could Be Interesting! Ethical Research Considerations in Engaging with Bilingual / Multilingual Child Participants in Human Inquiry

Abstract

Die wachsende Zahl an Forschungsaktivitäten mit Kindern stellen Politiker(innen) und Forscher(innen) vor neue Herausforderungen und Verantwortungen. In diesem Beitrag fordere ich insbesondere kanadische Politiker(innen) und Forscher(innen) auf, die epistemologischen und ethischen Annahmen, die ihren Sichtweisen von Kindern, von deren Kompetenzen und von Entscheidungen im Forschungsprozess unterliegen, kritisch zu reflektieren. Ich beziehe mich auf soziokulturelle (WYGOTSKI) und dialogische Theorien (BAKHTIN), um die Auseinandersetzung und den Dialog über die Teilnahme von Kindern in Forschungsprojekten in Gang zu setzen, und zwar vor allem dann, wenn Kinder in Forschungsarbeiten einbezogen werden, die mehrsprachig und in unterschiedlichen kulturellen Kontexten lernen und leben.

The increase in child-centered, participatory research activities with children poses new challenges and responsibilities to policy makers and researchers. This reflective piece is a call for Canadian policy makers and researchers to look more critically at their epistemological and ethical assumptions about their views of children, their competence and decision making in research activities. I draw on sociocultural (VYGOTSKY) and dialogic theories (BAKHTIN) to encourage conversation and dialogue about ethical issues in engaging child participants in human inquiry with particular attention to children who learn and live in diverse, multiple language and cultural contexts.

El incremento en las actividades de investigación participante con niños, centrada en ellos mismos, plantea nuevos desafíos y responsabilidades a los responsables de las políticas e investigadores. Esta reflexión es un llamado a los responsables de las políticas canadienses e investigadores a mirar más críticamente su competencia y toma de decisiones en las actividades de investigación y sus suposiciones epistemológicas y éticas acerca de los niños. Me fundamento en la teoría sociocultural (VYGOTSKY) y dialógica (BAKHTIN) para estimular la conversación y el diálogo sobre cuestiones éticas en niños participantes comprometidos en la investigación humana, con particular énfasis en los niños que aprenden y viven en contextos culturales con diversas y múltiples idiomas.
