Review Essay: Karl Schlögel liest die Zeit im Raum: Flanieren auf alten Wegen in Richtung neuer Horizonte

Abstract

Geschichte spielt nicht nur in der Zeit, sondern auch im Raum" (S.9). Karl SCHLÖGEL, Historiker und versierter Kenner der osteuropäischen Geschichte, Slawist, Soziologe und Philosoph, stellt ein frappierendes Manko der Geschichtswissenschaften fest: die Indifferenz gegenüber der räumlichen Dimension ihres Gegenstands. Die Zeit ist reif, spürt SCHLÖGEL, um die Kategorie Raum stark zu machen, sie neben oder besser wieder mitten hinein in die Zeit zu stellen und – entsprechend dem Zeitgeist einer sich enger vernetzenden Interdisziplinarität – die Verquickung und wechselseitige Bindung beider Größen deutlich zu machen: Raum und Zeit. Er spricht vom "spatial turn" (S.19-78), vom Lesen mentaler und territorialer Karten (S.81-268), von Oberflächenhaftung, topographischen Strukturen und versucht durch "Augenarbeit" (S.269-410) ein Diaphanbild der europäischen Geschichte (S.411-504) zu schaffen. Sein Buch ist ein vorantastender Erkundungsgang durch historische Räume und aktuelle Forschungslandschaften der Wissenschaft, die sich den natürlichen Landschaften überlagern. Es ist ein Plädoyer für die Schärfung der Sinne, eine Aufforderung zur Weitung der Perspektiven und Mut zur Empirie im globalen Zeitalter einer Gleichzeitigkeit der Ungleichzeitigkeiten.

History does not only happen in time, but in space as well." Karl SCHLÖGEL, expert in Eastern European history, Slavist, sociologist and philosopher, uncovers an astonishing deficit within the historical sciences: the indifference towards the physical and spatial dimension of its subjects. He feels that the time is ripe to strengthen the category "space." Space should again be placed in the midst of "time" in order to emphasize—in correspondence to the Zeitgeist of stronger interdisciplinary collaboration—the inseparable connection and mutual influence between both entities: time and space. SCHLÖGEL speaks of a "spatial turn" of the reading of mental and territorial maps, of surface adhesion and topographic structures. Through what he describes as "eye-work," he tries to create a translucent image of European history. His book is to be read as a forward-groping exploration through both—historical "spaces" and present "landscapes" of scientific research—which overlay the natural physical surroundings. His is an appeal to sharpen the senses, to widen perspectives—a request to empirical research to be courageous in a global epoch of simultaneity of the non-simultaneous.

Piensa que ha llegado el momento oportuno de consolidar la categoría "espacio". El espacio debería ubicarse nuevamente en medio del "tiempo" a fin de enfatizar – de acuerdo con el espíritu de la época de fortalecer la colaboración interdisciplinaria – la inseparable conexión y la influencia mutua entre ambas entidades: tiempo y espacio. SCHLÖGEL habla de un "giro espacial" en la lectura de mapas mentales y territoriales, de la adhesión al territorio y de las estructuras topográficas. A través de lo que él describe como un "trabajo de mirada", intenta crear una imagen traslúcida de la historia de Europa. Su libro debe ser leído como una avanzada exploración a través de ambos conceptos – los "espacios" históricos y los actuales "paisajes" de la investigación científica – que revisten los entornos físicos naturales. Es un llamado a afilar los sentidos para ensanchar perspectivas –una petición a la investigación empírica de ser valiente en una época global de simultaneidad de lo no-simultáneo.
