Abstract

Incarceration Nation: Investigative Poems of Prison, Hope and Terror ist das poetische Ergebnis der neunjährigen Lehrtätigkeit des Autors in Gefängnissen. Seit zwölf Jahren schreibt HARTNETT über das Leben in Haft und prangert die Zustände in Gefängnissen an. Er hat sich die Hoffnung auf eine bessere Zukunft der Häftlinge seitdem bewahrt: Seine Gedichte entstanden aus Gesprächen mit Gefängnisinsassen und denjenigen Personen, die ihm bei der Erforschung der Gefängniswelt und der Aufdeckung der Missstände des Strafsystems zur Seite standen, ohne dabei die Vision aufzugeben, die der amerikanischen Dichter Walt WHITMAN formulierte, als er Amerika als das "beste und radikalste demokratische Experiment der Welt" bezeichnete. In sieben Kapiteln finden sich 33 Gedichte über das Gefängnisleben; umfangreiche Anmerkungen runden den Gedichtband ab.

Incarceration Nation: Investigative Poems of Prison, Hope and Terror is the poetic outcome of the author's nine-year commitment to working in prisons as a teacher. For 12 years he has been writing about prison life and protesting conditions within prisons; he has never given up his hopes for a brighter future for those who are locked up. The poems are the result of his interactions with prisoners and those who have supported his efforts to explore the prison-industrial-complex, to reveal the ills of the system, and yet not to lose sight of the vision of American poet, Walt WHITMAN, who described "America as the world's best and most radical experiment in democracy" (p.1). Seven major sections organize 33 poetic pieces related to various prison settings, as well as to the author's life on the outside. A rich selection of notes supports the poetry.

Nación encarcelada: poemas de investigación sobre prisión, esperanza y terror es el resultado poético de nueve años de trabajo del autor como profesor en cárceles. Durante 12 años ha estado escribiendo sobre la vida en las prisiones y protestando sobre las condiciones en ellas; nunca ha renunciado a sus esperanzas de un futuro mejor para todos los prisioneros. Los poemas son el resultado de sus interacciones con los prisioneros y con aquellos que han apoyado sus esfuerzos de explorar el complejo-industrial-carcelario, para revelar las enfermedades del sistema, y sin perder de vista la visión del poeta americano Walt WHITMAN, que describió "América como el mejor y más radical experimento mundial de la democracia" (p.1).
