Integrating Qualitative and Quantitative Data: What does the User Need?

Abstract

Die sich abzeichnende Konvergenz zwischen quantitativen und qualitativen Ansätzen ist fragil. Dies wird nirgendwo deutlicher als im Falle von gemischten (qualitativen und quantitativen) Archiven. Annahmen über die grundlegende Form der Daten definieren hierbei nämlich, was als relevant erachtet wird: Während bei der Archivierung von quantitativen Daten qualitative Daten höchstens als Appendix auftauchen, bedient sich die Archivierung qualitativer Daten auf nur oberflächliche Weise der inhärenten Struktur quantitativer Daten. Folgerichtig resultieren Probleme für die Datenerhebung und -analyse. Dies wird an zwei quantitativ und qualitativ ausgerichteten Forschungsprojekten illustriert ("Occupational Cognition" und "Sexual Diaries"), in denen Entscheidungen über die (Re-) Präsentation der Daten das Retrieval und die Analyse ganz wesentlich beeinflusst haben.

The convergence between quantitative and qualitative approaches is fragile. Nowhere is this more evident than in the attempt to lodge mixed-mode data. Assumptions about the "basic" form of the data dictate what is considered relevant. Quantitative archiving assumes no more than qualitative appended material, and qualitative archiving sits lightly on the structured nature of the quantitative data. Problems consequently arise at the level of data-collection and of retrieval and analysis. By reference to two mixed quantitative-qualitative projects, this contention is illustrated (Occupational cognition and Sexual diaries) where decisions about representation of the data dramatically affect the possibilities of retrieval and analysis in context.

La convergencia entre los enfoques cualitativo y cuantitativo es frágil. En ningún lugar es esto más evidente que en la intención de cargar datos en modo mixto. Supuestos acerca de la forma "básica" de los datos dictan lo que se considera relevante. El archivo cuantitativo asume a los datos cualitativos no más que como material anexo, y el archivo cualitativo se asienta inconscientemente en la naturaleza estructurada de los datos cuantitativos. En consecuencia, los problemas emergen en el nivel de la colección, recuperación y análisis de los datos. Este conflicto se ilustra con referencia a dos proyectos mixtos (Cognición ocupacional y Diarios sexuales) en los que las decisiones acerca de la representación de los datos afectan dramáticamente las posibilidades de recuperación y análisis en el contexto.
