Digital memory: the visual recording of mass grave exhumations in contemporary Spain

Abstract

Die Exhumierungen von Opfern der repressiven Franco-Politik sind kulturelle Praktiken von großem heuristischem Wert, die eine Analyse des öffentlichen Auftretens, der Verbreitung und der Aneignung eines traumatischen Gedächtnisses im lokalen Kontext erlauben. Der Einsatz visueller Medien zur Aufzeichnung der sozialen Aktivitäten im Umfeld der Ausgrabungen dient nicht allein als Protokollierungsinstrument, sondern ist häufig sogar der Auslöser für ein entstehendes soziales Gedächtnis. Im ersten Teil des Aufsatzes beleuchten wir die verschiedenen Formen visueller und audiovisueller Intervention vonseiten der diversen Beteiligten, welche die Exhumierungen von Massengräbern als Veranstaltungen gestalten. Im zweiten Teil fokussieren wir auf die von Sozialwissenschaftler/innen eingesetzten visuellen Methoden, insbesondere auf die Videoaufzeichnung der narrativen Zeugnisse von Überlebenden und Augenzeugen.

Exhumations of the victims of Franco's repressive policies are cultural practices of tremendous heuristic value and allow for the analysis of the public emergence, circulation and consumption of traumatic memory in local contexts. The use of visual media to capture social action in the surroundings of the exhumations serves as both a recording and as a triggering device for this emerging social memory. In the first part of this article we shall reflect on the different forms of visual and audiovisual interventions by different social actors that shape around mass grave exhumations. In the second part we will focus on the visual methods used by social scientists, particularly the recording of video-testimony of survivors and witnesses.

Las exhumaciones de víctimas de la represión franquista son prácticas culturales de enorme valor heurístico y permiten analizar la emergencia pública, la circulación y consumo de memorias traumáticas en contextos locales. Los medios visuales que se emplean para capturar la acción social en torno a las exhumaciones sirven tanto de instrumentos de registro como de catalizadores de esta emergente memoria social. En la primera parte del artículo abordaremos los distintos modos de intervención visual y audiovisual en contextos de exhumaciones por parte de diferentes actores sociales. En la segunda parte nos centraremos en los métodos visuales empleados por los investigadores sociales y en particular la grabación de testimonios audiovisuales de supervivientes y testigos.
