Review Essay: Auto/Ethnography and Tinsel Town: Nathaniel Kohn's Pursuing Hollywood and How it Relates to My Own Experiences Chasing the Dream of Creating Culture Through Cinema

Abstract

In Nathaniel KOHNs "Pursuing Hollywood" werden Auto-/Ethnografie und interpretative Interaktion gemeinsam diskutiert mit postmoderner Zeichentheorie und den Machenschaften der Filmproduktion im "Hollywood-System". In die Besprechung von KOHNs Buch flechte ich, rückgreifend auf eigene Erfahrungen mit der Produktion eines Independentfilms, auto-/ethnografische Elemente im "La La Land". Während KOHNs Buch Insider-Einblicke in eine Welt zu gewähren beabsichtigt, die nur wenige aus erster Hand kennen, nutze ich das Buch vor dem Hintergrund ähnlicher Erfahrungen als Ausgangspunkt auch für eigene Beiträge.

In Nathaniel KOHN's Pursuing Hollywood, auto/ethnography and interpretive interaction are discussed alongside postmodern sign theory and the machinations of making films in the Hollywood system. Interwoven into this review-essay of KOHN's book are auto/ethnographical elements of the reviewer's personal experiences making an independent film and doing business in what the reviewer refers to as "La La Land." While KOHN's book is meant to be an insider's gaze onto a world few know first-hand, the reviewer has had similar experiences and reads the book as an identifying text and a launch point for his own experiential accounts.

En el libro "Pursuing Hollywood" de Nathaniel KOHN, la auto/etnografía y la interacción interpretativa se discuten junto con la teoría postmoderna del signo y las maquinaciones de hacer cine en el sistema Hollywood. En esta ensayo del libro de KOHN se entrelazan elementos auto/etnográficos de las experiencias personales del revisor al hacer cine independiente y hacer negocios en lo que el revisor se refiere como "Tierra de Los Ángeles". Si bien el libro está destinado a ser una mirada privilegiada sobre un mundo poco conocido de primera mano, el revisor ha tenido experiencias similares y lee el libro a partir de la identificación y aprovecha la oportunidad para contar su propia experiencia.
