Review Essay: Making a Mess with Situational Analysis?

Abstract

Adele CLARKE, Schülerin des Grounded-Theory-Mitbegründers Anselm STRAUSS, liefert mit Situational Analysis sowohl eine Methodologie als auch eine Methode, welche verspricht, systematisch die Unordnung, Heterogenität und Komplexität des jeweiligen Untersuchungsgegenstandes zu erfassen und angemessen zu repräsentieren. Ihre Ausgangsthese lautet, dass die Grounded-Theory-Methodologie teilweise einer modernistischen Perspektive verhaftet ist, insbesondere weil sie einen zu reinen und glatten "basic social process" beschreibt. Eine postmoderne Grounded-Theory-Methodologie würde hingegen die Heterogenität des Feldes fassen wollen, unter anderem unter Berücksichtigung der durch FOUCAULT, LATOUR und HARAWAY initiierten Diskurse. In diesem Rezensionsaufsatz soll gezeigt werden, dass das dadurch erzeugte epistemologische Hybrid zwar einige Unsicherheiten erzeugt, aber dennoch als ein sehr gutes Instrument angesehen werden kann, mit dem Forschende tiefer in ihr Material kommen und das insbesondere für praxisorientierte Sozialwissenschaft hilfreich ist.

Adele CLARKE, a student of grounded theory co-founder Anselm STRAUSS, uses situational analysis to develop both a methodology and a method which is able to represent the field's messiness, i.e., its heterogeneous and complex character. Grounded theory, CLARKE's starting point, is stuck in a modernist world-view, particularly by looking too much for a pure and oversimplified "basic social process". In order to make grounded theory post-modern, CLARKE considers discourses that are beyond pragmatism, e.g., those initiated by FOUCAULT, LATOUR, HARAWAY. This review essay argues that even though there remain some uncertainties in engaging in this epistemological hybrid, situational analysis provides a very good instrument for researchers to come into their material more deeply and, therefore, is a convincing tool for practice-oriented social science working with qualitative methods.

La teoría fundamentada, punto de partida del CLARKE, se basa en una visión modernista del mundo, especialmente por su búsqueda exagerada de un puro y excesivamente simplificado "proceso básico social". A fin de hacer teoría fundamentada postmoderna, CLARKE considera los discursos que están más allá del pragmatismo, por ejemplo, aquellos iniciados por FOUCAULT, LATOUR y HARAWAY. Este ensayo plantea que, aun cuando queden algunas incertidumbres en la elaboración de este híbrido epistemológico, el análisis situacional proporciona un instrumento muy bueno para que los investigadores profundicen en su material y, por tanto, es una herramienta convincente para la ciencia social orientada a la práctica que utilice métodos cualitativos.
