The Making of Harry and Susie Get Married? A Performative Approach to Data Collection

Abstract

In diesem Beitrag wird der mögliche Nutzen und werden Schwierigkeiten diskutiert, die resultieren, wenn kunstbasierte Medien zur Erhebung sozialwissenschaftlicher Daten zum Einsatz kommen. Dabei wird auf eine Studie zurückgegriffen, die sich mit den Erfahrungen ehemaliger (Alkohol-) Abhängiger befasst, die an einer partizipativen Theaterinitiative mitarbeiteten. Von Interessiere sind insbesondere partizipative Methoden als Mittel, an der sozialen Wirklichkeit der Forschungsteilnehmer/innen teilhaben zu können: Ich konzentriere mich im Beitrag auf die Frage, wie die Teilnehmer/innen die Theaterinitiative wahrgenommen haben und wie brauchbar die Daten sind, die durch performative und kollaborative Interaktionen gesammelt wurden. Zusammenfassend scheint ein performativer Ansatz der Datenerhebung trotz einiger Begrenzungen neue Wege zu eröffnen, Forschungsteilnehmer/innen deutlich mehr Macht über die (Re-) Präsentation ihrer eigenen Stimme(n) zu gewähren als im Falle traditioneller Forschung. Ich diskutiere auch einige Möglichkeiten der (Wieder-) Vergegenwärtigung durch performative Methoden, wobei ich insbesondere die Frage behandele, inwieweit die Zusammenarbeit in der Theaterinitiative als Fokusgruppen-Diskussion konzeptualisiert werden kann. Insgesamt versuche ich zu zeigen, in welcher Weise ein performativer Ansatz dazu beitragen kann, die Begrenzungen traditioneller akademischer Darstellungsformen produktiv zu überschreiten, um Wissensformen und Erfahrungen sozial marginalisierter Gruppen angemessen einbeziehen und präsentieren zu können.

This paper examines the potential impact and practical difficulties of using arts-based tools for the collection of social scientific data. It draws upon research which examines the experiences of ex/recovering addicts/alcoholics involved as participants in a participatory theatre initiative. The author's interest is in exploring performative methods as tools capable of engaging with the realities of research participants. The analysis focuses on participant perceptions of the initiative and on the viability of the data produced through performative and collaborative interaction. The author argues that a performative approach to data collection offers ways forward, despite some limitations, by offering participants more power over the (re)presentation of their voices. The author explores some of the possibilities for the re-envisioning of performative methods, focusing in particular on the extent to which the initiative can be understood as a focus group discussion. The paper highlights the importance of a performative approach for transcending the traditional representational constraints of academia and engaging with knowledge rooted in the experiences of socially marginalised groups.

Este artículo examina el impacto potencial y las dificultades prácticas que el uso de herramientas basadas en el arte presentan en la recogida de datos científico sociales. Se basa en investigación que examina las experiencia de ex/en rehabilitación adictos/alcohólicos involucrados como participantes en una iniciativa de teatro participativo. El interés de la autora reside en explorar métodos performativos como herramientas capaces de conectar con las realidades de los participantes en la investigación. El análisis se centra en las percepciones de los participantes en la iniciativa, y en la viabilidad de los datos producidos a través de una interacción colaborativa y performativa. La autora defiende que un enfoque performativo en la recolección de datos ofrece vías avanzadas, a pesar de algunas limitaciones, al ofrecer a los participantes mas poder sobre la (re)presentación de sus voces. La autora explora algunas de las posibilidades para la re-imaginación de los métodos performativos, centrándose particularmente en el grado en el que la iniciativa pueda ser entendida como una discusión de grupo focal. El articulo subraya la importancia de un enfoque performativo para trascender las tradicionales restricciones representativas del mundo académico, y comprometerse con conocimiento enraizado en las experiencias de grupos socialmente marginados.
