Collective Imagining: Collaborative Story Telling through Image Theater

Abstract

Dieser Artikel ist als Dialog zweier Praktiker/innen des Image Theater konzipiert, eine Technik, bei der der Körper eingesetzt wird, um Geschichten zu erzählen. In Quebec und Schottland ansässig, diskutieren wir, wie eine performative Untersuchung (FELS 1998) mittels des Online-Mediums auf eine Art und Weise dokumentiert und weitergegeben werden kann, die auf den Prinzipien interaktiven Theaters aufbaut bzw. mit diesen kohärent ist. Wir hoffen, dass wir mit unserer Präsentation uns selbst als denjenigen, die diese Arbeit involviert sind und unseren Leserinnen und Lesern ermöglichen, performative Sozialwissenschaft als "spect-actors" (BOAL 1979) zu betreiben und auf dem Wege der Reflektion unserer Praxis Anstöße für weitere Inszenierungen geben können. Ein Schlüsselaspekt, mit dem wir uns befassen, ist die Frage, wie physische Dialoge durch Körper entstehen – erstens als Methode des Handels in der Welt, aus dem sozialer Sinn entsteht, und zweitens als Konzept, das eine ästhetische, symbolisch-metaphorische Sprache nutzt im Verlauf eines Prozesses, den ein Kollege als "Bodystorming" bezeichnet hat (dem Brainstorming vergleichbar, aber eben mit dem emotionalen und sensorischen Körper als Quelle und Ausdrucksort).

This article is a dialogue between two practitioners of Image theater—a technique which involves using the body to share stories. Working in Quebec and Scotland, we discuss the potential ways such a form of performative inquiry (FELS, 1998) can, through an online medium, be documented and disseminated in ways that are coherent with, and build on, the principles of interactive theater. Our hope is that such an exploration will enable the participants in the work, ourselves, and our readers as performative social science researchers, so that we may engage as spect-actors (BOAL, 1979) with the material and build communities of practice through reflection on action (praxis). A key aspect we consider is ways in which physical dialogue through the body evolves—first as a method of enacting the world, where collective meaning emerges and secondly, as a concept that uses symbolic/metaphoric aesthetic language through what one colleague calls "body-storming" (like "brain-storming," but with the emotional and sensory body as a source and language of expression).

Este artículo es un diálogo entre dos profesionales del teatro de imágenes, una técnica que implica el uso del cuerpo para compartir historias. Trabajando desde Quebec y Escocia, discutimos sobre las vías potenciales para que las formas de investigación performativa (FELS 1998) pueden documentarse y difundirse a través de un medio ‘online’ de maneras coherentes con, y basadas en los principios del teatro interactivo. Nuestra esperanza es que este tipo de exploración permitirá a los participantes en el trabajo, a nosotros mismos y a nuestros lectores en tanto que investigadores en ciencia social preformativa, participar como especta-actores (BOAL 1979) con el material y construir comunidades de práctica a través de la reflexión sobre la acción (praxis). Un aspecto que consideramos fundamental son las formas como evoluciona el diálogo físico a través del cuerpo, primero como un método de representar el mundo, donde emerge el significado colectivo y, en segundo lugar, como un concepto que utiliza el lenguaje estético simbólico/metafórico a través de lo que una colega denomina "tormenta de cuerpos" (similar a la "tormenta de ideas", pero con el cuerpo emocional y sensorial a modo de fuente y lenguaje de expresión).
