Performance, Art and Ethnography

Abstract

Die Geschichte von Performance und Kunst lässt sich vergleichen mit dem Interesse sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung an Kulturkritik und Kommentierung. Verfahren und theoretische Anlehnung hierfür finde ich in der anthropologischen Feldforschung, die ich bemühe, um die Performance Salle C der in Montreal ansässigen Künstlerin Olivia BOUDREAU zu analysieren. Die Erforschung von Performances durch Ethnografie ermöglicht eine reflexive, kontext- und zeitabhängige Annäherung, die sowohl den Perspektiven der Künstler/innen als auch der Besucher/innen Rechnung trägt. Es geht dabei um Interpretationen, die nicht auf das traditionelle Feld formaler und materialer Kulturanalysen beschränkt sind, sondern eine ethnografische Annäherung an Performances und eine performative Wertschätzung von Publikum und Künstler/in beinhalten.

The history of performance art can be compared with the social sciences pursuit of cultural critique and commentary. Methods and theoretical frameworks are borrowed from anthropological field research throughout this analysis of Montreal artist Olivia BOUDREAU's 2007 performance Salle C. Exploring performance art through ethnography provides reflexive, context-dependent renderings of time-sensitive work—acknowledging both artists' and visitors' perspectives. This is an interpretation of performance (not limited to traditional formal and material culture analyses) that seeks to demonstrate an ethnographic rendering of performance, and performative appreciation of audience and artist.

La historia del arte performance se puede comparar con la búsqueda de las ciencias sociales por la crítica y el debate cultural. En este análisis del performance Salle C, hecho en 2007 por la artísta de Montreal Olivia BOUDREAU, se adoptan los métodos y marcos teóricos procedentes del campo de la investigación antropológica. La exploración del arte performance a través de la etnografía permite una interpretación reflexiva, dependiente del tiempo y del contexo del trabajo, y que considera las perspectivas del artista y de los visitantes. Esta es una interpretación del performance (no limitada al tradicional análisis de la cultura formal y material) que trata de mostrar una representación etnográfica del performance, y una comprensión performativa del público y el artista.
