Limited = Limiting Reading of Social Constructionism: A Reply to Carl Ratner's "Epistemological, Social, and Political Conundrums in Social Constructionism"

Abstract

RATNERs Beitrag "Epistemologische, soziale und politische Rätsel des Sozialen Konstruktionismus" steht exemplarisch dafür, wie eine limitierte und damit limitierende Auslegung des Sozialen Konstruktionismus den Eindruck erwecken kann, dass es sich hierbei um eine homogene – und dabei zutiefst negative – Einheit handele. Mit meinem Beitrag unternehme ich den Versuch, aufzeigen, dass die Ironie von RATNERs Artikel nicht darin zu finden ist, dass er den Sozialen Konstruktionismus falsch interpretiert, sondern dass er kaschiert, dass RATNER selbst als (hyper-realer) Konstruktionist in Erscheinung tritt. RATNERs Darstellung bietet sich dazu an, so das Argument, die textuelle Konstruktion von (Hyper-) Realität in situ zu studieren. Um die Behauptung, dass der Soziale Konstruktionismus die Möglichkeit von Wahrheit grundsätzlich ablehne, auf der Basis von RATNERs eigenem Beitrag zu widerlegen, wird gezeigt, dass sein Wahrheitsspruch – obwohl (teilweise) arbiträr und damit grundsätzlich veränderbar – durchaus reale Implikationen (sowohl evident wie auch potenziell) hat für all diejenigen, die sich darauf beziehen (sei dies in negativer oder affirmativer Weise). Der Kommentar schließt mit Überlegungen zu einem Ethos des Lesens, das sich von RATNERs Deutungspraxis dahingehend abgrenzt, dass eine Sensibilisierung für die Singularität und Diversität sozial konstruktionistischer Texte angestrebt wird. Ebenfalls betont wird durch das Ethos die Bedeutung von Kreativität und Imagination im Umgang mit dem Erbe des Sozialen Konstruktionismus.

RATNER's "Epistemological, Social, and Political Conundrums in Social Constructionism" provides ample illustration of how a grossly negligent, read both limited and limiting, exegesis of social constructionism has the demonstrable effect of installing the impression of the subject matter forming a homogeneous unity and an utmost negative one at that. The present commentary will show that the irony of RATNER's article is not that it has gotten social constructionism completely wrong but that it conceals that he himself is a (hyperreal) constructionist and that his account might be used for pinpointing how the construction of (hyper)reality works in textual practice. To rebut RATNER's assertion that social constructionist theorizing engenders a relativistic worldview of "everything goes" on the basis of his own account, it will be shown that though his truth is (partly) random, temporary and thus alterable it does have real implications (both existent and potential) for those referring to it, in either positive or negative terms. The commentary will close with tentative suggestions for an ethos of reading that seeks to cultivate a sensitivity towards the singular spirit of social constructionist writings as well as the necessity of creative inheriting and hence invention.

"Acertijos epistemológicos, sociales y políticos en el construccionismo social" de Carl Ratner da una vasta ilustración de como una exégesis del construccionismo social bastante negligente – léase, exégesis limitada y que limita – tiene el demostrable efecto de instalar la impresión acerca del sujeto, de formar una unidad homogénea, es más una unidad extremamente negativa. Este comentario mostrará que la ironía del artículo de RATNER no queda en que haya puesto al construccionismo social completamente falso, si no que oculta que él mismo es un construccionista (hipereal) y que su expocición podría ser usada para subrayar como la construcción del (hiper)realismo trabaja en la práctica textual. Para rebatir la afirmación de RATNER de que la teorización socioconstruccionista genera un punto de vista relativista del "todo pasa" desde la base de propio relato, se demostrará que aunque su verdad es (parcialmente) casual, temporal y, por tanto, alterable, tiene implicaciones reales (existentes y potenciales) para los que se refieren a ella – sea en términos negativos o sea en términos positivos. El comentario cerrará tanto con sugerencias tentativas para un ethos de lectura que busca cultivar una sensibilidad hacia el espíritu singular de los escritos socioconstruccionistas como con la necesidad de la herencia creativa y, por tanto, de la invención.
