The Effects of Computer Assisted Research on Chilean Academics

Abstract

Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es aufzuzeigen, in welcher Weise Computersoftware in den (qualitativen und quantitativen) Sozialwissenschaften in Chile zum Einsatz kommt. Gerade angesichts ihrer wachsenden Bedeutung ist es wichtig nachzuvollziehen, in welcher Weise diese Technologien sukzessive in verschiedenen akademischen und professionellen Gemeinschaften in Chile Verwendung gefunden haben. Dabei fällt auf, dass die meisten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler deren Gebrauch nicht in der regulären Ausbildung erlernt, sondern sich mehr oder weniger privat angeeignet haben. Ursache hierfür ist ein wachsender Druck auf die Universitäten durch den Arbeitsmarkt mit der Folge einer wachsenden Verbreitung der Software und der Anwendung derartiger Technologien ohne ausreichende methodologische Reflexion.

The purpose of this article is to describe the use of computer software by Chilean social scientists engaged in both qualitative and quantitative research. Because of its increasing use it is important to trace its development to understand the effects of this technology on the academic and professional community in a South American country. Rather than receiving certified training most academics have taught themselves how to use such software. This has been due, in part, to increasing pressure placed upon universities from the professional labor market, the utilization of the software by increasing numbers of researchers, and the employment of this technology without considering its methodological appropriateness.

El propósito de este artículo es describir el uso de programas de computación por científicos sociales chilenos involucrados tanto en investigación cualitativa como cuantitativa. Dado el incremento en su uso, es importante trazar su desarrollo para entender los efectos de esta tecnología en la comunidad profesional y académica en un país de Sudamérica. En vez recibir una capacitación certificada, la mayoría de los académicos se han enseñado por ellos mismos cómo usar tales programas. Esto se ha debido, en parte, a la presión creciente puesta sobre las universidades por el mundo del trabajo profesional, la utilización de los programas por un creciente número de investigadores y el empleo de esta tecnología sin considerar su pertinencia metodológica.
