A Qualitative Study of Multicultural Identities: Three Cases of London's Inner-City Children

Abstract

Metropolen erlauben Menschen aus aller Welt, multikulturelle Beziehungen einzugehen und ihre Kinder in einer anderen, manchmal dritten Kultur aufzuziehen. Wie finden diese Kinder ihre Identität? Gerade multikulturelle Identität wird oft als krisenhaft beschrieben, weil die Betroffenen sich in keiner der Kulturen akzeptiert fühlen bzw. marginalisiert sind oder als Außenseiter betrachtet werden. Identitätskrisen müssen deshalb unbedingt ernst genommen werden, aber ebenso – und manchmal noch mehr – geht es um die Chance, einen Freiraum zwischen den Kulturen zu schaffen und diesen für ein neues Selbstkonzept zu nutzen. Dieser Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit Kindern, die in London unter dem Einfluss von mehr als zwei Kulturen aufwachsen – Vater und Mutter kommen aus verschiedenen Kulturen, das Kind wächst in einer dritten (England) auf. Anschließend an das Konzept der sozialen Repräsentationen wird untersucht, wie diese Kinder ihre eigene Identität bilden und welche Rolle unterschiedliche kulturelle Ich-Positionen in der individuellen, dialogischen Selbstkonstruktion spielen.

Metropolitan areas present opportunities for persons from all over the world to form multicultural relationships and raise their child in a third culture. How do these children make sense of who they are? Multicultural identities have often been described as being in "crisis"—the individual does not feel fully accepted in any culture and is depicted as "on the border" or "an outsider within." While the "identity crisis" should be taken seriously, the ability to create a space in between cultures, to form a novel self-concept is equally, if not more important. Children growing up in London with the immediate influence of more than two cultures—mother and father originating from diverse cultures and raising their child in the third (England)—and how they start to make sense of themselves is analyzed from a social representations perspective that emphasizes the marking of different cultural I-positions within the person's dialogical self-construction.

Las áreas metropolitanas presentan oportunidades para las personas de todo el mundo para desarrollar relaciones multiculturales y criar a sus hijos en una tercera cultura. ¿De qué manera estos niños hacen sentido de quiénes son? Las identidades multiculturales han sido frecuentemente descritas como en "crisis" – el individuo no se siente completamente aceptado en ninguna cultura y se le considera como "en la frontera" o como un "extranjero dentro de un grupo". Mientras que la "crisis de identidad" debe tomarse seriamente, la habilidad para crear un espacio entre las culturas, y formar un concepto nuevo del self, es quizás más importante. Los niños que viven en Londres, crecen con la influencia inmediata de más de dos culturas – la madre y el padre originarios de culturas diversas y criando a sus hijos en una tercera (Inglaterra) – y se analiza cómo empiezan a crear sentido de sí mismos desde una perspectiva de las representaciones sociales que enfatiza la marca de diferentes posiciones culturales dentro de la construcción dialógica del sí mismo.
