Review Essay: Autoethnography: Answerability/Responsibility in Authoring Self and Others in the Social Sciences/Humanities

Abstract

ELLIS' methodologischer Roman über Autoethnographie belegt die wachsende Zahl an alternativen Formen des Schreibens in den Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften, die sich mit der dialogischen Konzeption von Selbst, "Stimme" und menschlichem Bewusstsein befassen. Autoethnographie ist ein eigenes Genre, bei dem Autoren und Autorinnen auf ihre eigenen Erfahrungen zurückgreifen und dabei das Individuelle und Kulturelle so einbinden, das das Selbst und die Anderen in den jeweiligen sozialen Kontexten positioniert werden (REED-DANAHAY, 1997). Um solche selbstreflexiven Wissens- und Schreibmodelle nachvollziehbar zu machen, greife ich auf BAKHTINs Konzept von Autorenschaft als kreativer Verantwortlichkeit (otvetsvennost) zurück, demzufolge das Selbst nicht nur gegenüber dem sozialen Umfeld verantwortlich ist, sondern auch für die Autorenschaft jeder "Antwort", die der ursprüngliche Text erzeugt. The Ethnographic I dient hierbei als nützlicher Ausgangspunkt zum Verstehen von Autoethnographie als Genre und als alternativem Diskurs über das durch das Schreiben hervorgebrachte Selbst und die Anderen.

ELLIS' methodological novel about autoethnography is an example of the increasing emergence of alternative forms of writing in the social sciences/humanities that focus on a dialogic notion of self, voice and human consciousness. Autoethnography is a genre of writing in which authors draw on their own lived experiences, connect the personal to the cultural and place the self and others within a social context (REED-DANAHAY, 1997). To understand this commitment to self-reflexive ways of knowing and writing, I draw on BAKHTIN's concept of authoring as creative answerability/responsibility (otvetsvennost) that views a self as answerable not only to the social environment, but is also answerable for the authoring of its responses. The Ethnographic I serves as a useful text to engage the issues that autoethnography raises both as genre and alternative discourses for authoring self and others.

La novela metodológica de ELLIS acerca de la autoetnografía es un ejemplo del creciente surgimiento de formas alternativas de escribir en las ciencias sociales y humanidades que se enfocan en una noción dialógica del self, la voz, y la conciencia humana. La autoetnografía es un género de literatura en el que los autores se basan en sus propias experiencias vividas, conectan lo personal con lo cultural y colocan al self y a los otros dentro de un contexto social (REED-DANAHAY, 1997). Para comprender este compromiso con formas reflexivas de conocer y escribir, me baso en el concepto de BAKHTIN de autoría como una replicabilidad/responsabilidad creativa (otvetsvennost) que visualiza al self como algo a lo que se puede responder, no solo en el medio ambiente social, sino que también se le responde por la autoría de sus respuestas. El ojo (yo) etnográfico es un texto útil para involucrar los aspectos que la autoetnografía hace surgir como género y como discursos alternativos para la autoría del self y de los otros.
