Review: Christine Feil, Regina Decker & Christoph Gieger (2004). Wie entdecken Kinder das Internet?

Abstract

Das vorliegende Buch geht der Frage nach, wie und wann Kinder das Internet benutzen, welche Suchstrategien sie dabei verwenden und mit welchen Schwierigkeiten sie zu kämpfen haben. Dazu wurden zum einen Leitfadeninterviews mit Eltern und Erzieherinnen durchgeführt. Es wurden zum anderen die Kinder in einer Art Laborsituation beim Surfen im Internet beobachtet. Darüber hinaus beinhaltet der Band eine umfassende Darstellung des deutschsprachigen "Kinderweb" sowie der Kinder- und Jugendschutzproblematik. Der Band ist an jenen Stellen besonders interessant (vielleicht weil einer allgemeinen Erwartungshaltung widersprechend), an denen aufgezeigt wird, wie wenig (mit Ausnahme von kommerziellen Angeboten) das heutige Internet insbesondere jüngeren Kindern bietet. Als explorative Studie konzipiert bietet der Band einen guten Überblick über das "Kinderweb" sowie Einblicke in mögliche kindliche Umgangsformen mit dem Internet, wobei es der Darstellung aber an theoretischer Tiefe fehlt.

This book deals with the following questions: When and where do children use the Internet? What search strategies do they deploy? What difficulties do they encounter when surfing the web? In order to answer these questions, the authors interviewed parents and instructors about children’s Internet use. They also observed children surfing the Internet, though these observations were made in a research laboratory-like setting rather than in a natural context. In addition to the results of this empirical study, the book includes a presentation of German-language websites suitable for children and a discussion of the protection of children and young people on the Internet. The text is especially interesting when it becomes apparent, possibly in contradiction to common expectations, how little the Internet has to offer to children apart from commercial web sites. The study is to be understood as an explorative study and therefore lacks a certain theoretical depth. It offers a good overview of the (German-language) Internet for children and allows insights into possible ways in which children deal with the Internet.

Este libro trata de las siguientes preguntas: ¿Cuándo y dónde usan internet los niños? ¿Qué estrategias despliegan? ¿Qué dificultades encuentran cuando navegan en internet? A fin de contestar estas preguntas, los autores entrevistaron a padres de familia e instructores acerca del uso de internet que hacen los niños. Los autores también observaron niños navegando, aunque estas observaciones fueron hechas en una escenario tipo laboratorio de investigación y no en un contexto natural. Además de los resultados de este estudio empírico, el libro incluye una presentación de sitios alemanes que son apropiados para niños y una discusión acerca de la protección de niños y jóvenes en internet. El texto es especialmente interesante cuando se hace evidente, posiblemente en contradicción con las expectativas más comunes, lo poco que internet tiene para ofrecer a los niños, aparte de los sitios comerciales. El estudio debe entenderse como un estudio exploratorio y por lo tanto carece de cierta profundidad teórica. Ofrece una buena síntesis de internet (en idioma alemán) para los niños y permite cierta claridad acerca de las posibles formas en que los niños se relacionan con internet.
