There is hardly an area of society in which social disparities have such a strong influence on mobility as education, as is shown based on life course analyses drawing on examples from Brazil and Colombia. If inequalities based on origin and milieu are not compensated by institutional education, but are exacerbated or conceded, as in the case of the education systems in Colombia and Brazil, then individual educational advancement is challenging, and only few succeed. Rather, social disparities are reproduced in these countries as a result of institutional discrimination, which hardly favours processes of advancement and habitus transformation.... view less
