The transsectionality approach adds a historiographical perspective to the concept of intersectionality. The analytic framework of transsectionality takes as its starting point the concept of multiple historical relationalities of discourses and practices; by tracing their body-historical significance. From this view we examine the fictional "Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man" by writer, musician, and civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938), published anonymously in 1912 wherein the protagonist moves around in spaces within the boundaries of the racist segregation regime, expressive of his longings for the privileges of whiteness and transgender yearnings (Snorton 2012). In what is effectively a personal testimony, transsectional lines of flight can thus be traced at the intersection of race, class, and gender, which can also be read historically 'between the lines' with reference to the concept of tracing (Mommertz 2015). Johnson's autobiography is recognized as a historical source that reflects not only the temporal-spatial regime of segregation but works as a body history that traverses and transgresses this spatial regime, transforming it in the process.... view less
