Reading the interviews against the background of theoretical considerations on the value of studying abroad (Michael Byram) and modes of understanding foreign cultures (Mario Erdheim and Jürgen Kramer), the study shows that only slight traces of what could be called 'neoliberal subjectivity' can be detected in students' responses. Stu- dents' evaluations instead centre on aspects of personality formation, intercultural understanding and human bonding.... view less
