Sustainability has gained growing global recognition as a key concept of international and local governance approaches and, more recently, is thus finding its way into the daily practice of memory institutions through the efforts of UNESCO. However, what the concept transferred from ecology and economy means in the context of culture remains open, leaving it to the cultural field to spell out how to apply it in practice. So far, these developments have hardly been scientifically reflected in their significance for memory and remembrance work. Taking the assumption that "sustainability" is discursively constructed as an entry point, this paper examines diverging understandings of "sustainability" that are currently negotiated in three different fields of Critical Heritage Studies: on the one hand, there is UNESCO’s governance approach of sustainable development. In the cultural sector, on the other hand, two new fields of Critical Heritage Studies are emerging with Germany’s ratification of UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013 and the digitalization of cultural heritage, which are putting current safeguarding practice of memory institutions under scrutiny. The paper suggests considering "sustainability" as "regimes of living" (Collier/Lakoff 2005), which places the contestation of moral orders on how we should live at the centre.... view less
