Als "deutscher Kennedy" zum Sieg? Willy Brandt, die USA und die Medien

Abstract

Am Beispiel Willy Brandts und seiner Beziehungen zu den USA wird deutsche und amerikanische Außenpolitik als transnationale Mediengeschichte interpretiert. Wie wirkte sich das besondere Verhältnis zu den USA auf den medialen und politischen Stil der Bundesrepublik aus? Dies wird erstens anhand der publizistischen Vermittlung von Brandts Reisen in die USA und der daraus resultierenden Imagebildung untersucht. Zweitens wird nach amerikanischen Einflüssen auf Brandts Inszenierungspraktiken und die damit verbundene Medienberichterstattung gefragt; dabei steht John F. Kennedy als Vorbild im Zentrum. Der Untersuchungsschwerpunkt liegt auf der Zeit von 1958 bis 1961.

Focusing on Willy Brandt as an example, this article approaches German and US foreign policies through the perspective of transnational media history. How did the "special relationship" with the USA influence the style of media representation and politics in the Federal Republic of Germany? First, the article reconstructs the news-paper reports of Brandt's visits to the USA and the images resulting from them. Second, the analysis traces the American influences on Brandt’s political and media styles with special emphasis on John F. Kennedy as a role model. The main focus of the discussion lies on the phase from 1958 to 1961.
