Die Geschichte hinter dem Foto: Authentizität, Ikonisierung und Überschreibung eines Bildes aus dem Vietnamkrieg

Abstract

Mit keinem anderen Bild verbindet sich der Schrecken des Vietnamkrieges und der Schrecken des Krieges im Allgemeinen so sehr wie mit dem Foto des Mädchens Kim Phúc. Die Aufnahme machte der vietnamesische Fotograf Nick Ut am 8. Juni 1972 in der Nähe des Dorfes Trang Bang. Sein vielfach ausgezeichnetes Bild wurde zu einer zentralen Ikone des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als solche führt sie im kollektiven Gedächtnis mittlerweile ein eigenes Leben und konstituiert eine Wirklichkeit, die mit der ursprünglich abgebildeten nur noch wenig gemein hat. Immer wieder ist das Bild politisch, kommerziell und religiös funktionalisiert und in neue Kontexte gestellt worden. Der Aufsatz rekonstruiert die politischen und medialen Zusammenhänge, in denen das Bild entstand. Zugleich verfolgt er den jedem großen Krieg nachfolgenden Prozess der Überzeichnung und Überschreibung der ursprünglichen Bilder sowie der mit wachsendem Zeitabstand zunehmenden Legenden- und Mythenbildung.

No picture expresses the terror of the Vietnam War and the terror of war in general more radically than the photograph of the girl Kim Phúc. The picture was taken by the Vietnamese photographer Nick Ut on 8 June 1972 near the village of Trang Bang. His photograph, which has won several awards, has become a major icon of the twentieth century. It has taken on a life of its own in collective memory whose reality has little in common with the reality originally depicted. This image has been used for political, commercial and religious purposes, and placed in new contexts again and again. The article closely examines the circumstances in which the photograph was made in relation to political issues and the mass media. At the same time it considers the process of rewriting and refiguring original images which occurs in the wake of every major war along with the legends and myths that increase in proportion to the lapse of time.
