The control of written culture was aimed at overseeing the production, dissemination and reception of the book, perceived as an active and fluid tool for changing the mentalities of different communities. Our analysis focused on identifying the evolutionary stages of knowledge control in the Danube Principalities and the Ottoman Empire in the mid-nineteenth century and through the subsequent decades.
