%X A taxonomy of order dimensions for a society is outlined, and strategies for constructing empirical indicators for these dimensions are discussed. Reflecting on this taxonomy, the aim of this article is twofold: An attempt is made to explicate the concept of social prestige, and an occupational prestige scale is proposed. The difficulty with regard to both objectives is that prestige must be conceptualized as a subjective variable as well as an objective structural dimension of society. It is argued that this difficulty can only be overcome if prestige is not associated with individuals, individual roles, or individual attributes but rather with social collectivities which find their identity and differentiate themselves from others by mechanisms of social closure. From this perspective, prestige is seen as being linked to systems of closed social positions. In as much as the levels of such systems form a transitive hierarchy, prestige judgments must be conceived as contributing to those strategies of exclusion and usurpation this hierarchy is built on. In accordance with this reasoning, the occupational prestige scale (Magnitude Prestige Scale, MPS), which is based on prestige judgments of representative cross-sectional samples, is constructed as mapping an "order of social closure". The construct validity of the proposed scale is determined with regard to status attainment models of two independent data sets.
