Statt nach der Materialität sozialer Medien zu fragen, werden wir in diesem Beitrag deren Objektivationspraktiken untersuchen. Dass Materie immer mitspielt, steht kaum noch in Frage. Eine starke Betonung der bloßen Materialität hindert einschlägige Untersuchungen aber daran, über die bekannte Feststellung des matter matters hinauszugehen. Wir erarbeiten daher in Anschluss an Berger und Pullberg einen Begriff von Objektivation, den wir in zwei Prozesse unterteilen: Objektivation als Bedingung von Praktiken (als Gegebenes) und als Ergebnis von Praktiken (als Gemachtes). Vor allem letzteres bietet analytische Potenziale für rezente Social-Media-Praktiken: Gemeinsame gemachte Objektivation gehört zu den zentralen Praktiken der Social-Media-Plattformen.... view less

We argue that rather than the materiality of social media, their objectification practices should be researched: That matter matters is widely accepted today, however, its continued invocation prevents relevant approaches from moving beyond this finding. Therefore, following Berger and Pullberg, we develop a concept of objectivation that we differentiate into two processes: objectivation as a condition of practices (as datum) and as the result of practices (as factum).
