Women are still underrepresented in academia. This article analyzes, based on the example of job offers in academia, to what extent gender inequalities are caused by a gender-specific framing of career decisions, given different partnership and family constellations. Respondents with or without a partner were asked in a factorial survey to rate a set of hypothetical job offers which would require regional (household) moves. In contrast to actual regional mobility patterns, there was only little evidence of gender differences when judging the attractiveness of standardized job offers. However, female scientists who lived with a partner assessed the probability of a joint move to be slightly lower than their male colleagues did. According to multivariate analyses, this difference is mainly caused by differences in regard to career progress (measured by age difference in a partnership), which supports household economic and bargaining theory.... view less
