Politisches Denken jenseits von Begründung und Fatalismus: Überlegungen zu einer erweiterten Lesart Judith Shklars

Abstract

In diesem Aufsatz zeige ich, dass Shklars liberale Politische Theorie und ihr Diktum, Grausamkeit an erste Stelle zu setzen, ohne begründungstheoretische Fundierung auskommen. Shklars Liberalismus erscheint dabei als eine parteiische, herrschaftskritische Perspektive ohne idealen Begründungsbezug, die nach kontextgebundenen und historischen Blockaden und Möglichkeiten der Selbstbestimmung gerade auch schwacher AkteurInnen fragt. Dafür arbeite ich Shklars Skepsis anhand dreier Weichenstellungen ihres Denkens heraus - Pluralität, Dissens und subjektiver Sinn für Ungerechtigkeit -, die einem begründungstheoretische Vorgehen entgegenstehen. In einem zweiten Schritt zeige ich dann, dass ihre Orientierung an der Grausamkeit keine statische, minimale Grundnorm ist, sondern eine beständige Befragung der Machtverhältnisse erfordert und eine fordernde, politische Perspektive jenseits der akuten Grausamkeitsverhinderung öffnet.

In this paper I reconstruct Shklar’s argumentative approach beyond justification and link it with her liberalism of fear and her demand of putting cruelty first. As a result of this reading Shklar’s liberalism can be seen as a partisan and critical perspective without ideal justification that looks for contextual and historical blockages and possibilities of self-determination especially of the weak. Therefore, I present central elements of Shklar’s skeptical thinking - plurality, dissent and a subjective sense of injustice -, that oppose foundational approaches. Secondly, I will show that her approach to cruelty offers no static and minimal fundament for a liberal state, but a permanent enquiry into power relations and a demanding political perspective beyond the hindrance of violence.
