"Treideln - treilen - trekken - jagen - bomätschen ..." was the title of an illustrated contribution to DSA 25, 2002 (published in honour of D. Ellmers), pp. 383ff. The term was defined there, as here, in the sub-title of the article. One year later, in DSA 26, 2003, pp. 43ff, two illustrated supplements to the first contribution were provided. In the present volume 33 of the DSA, the series continues. Part 3 is a further illustrated supplement on the theme of towing, occasioned by the fact that the author has meanwhile come across additional pictorial and other material from which he has once again compiled an annotated selection. This time the arduous task of towing by manpower is documented only by a single pictorial example from seventeenth-century China. All of the other illustrations are chronologically ordered testimonies to Central European towing by horsepower in the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. The large majority of them apply to the Rhine, Mosel, Main, Spree and Danube as well as waterways in Holland. The commentaries once again address the attendant and concurrent circumstances, details including those related to inland vessel typology, special technical aspects of vessel-drive and towing, and in some cases relevant linguistic aspects.... view less
