Moderne Unternehmen entwickeln immer stärker Merkmale virtueller Organisationen.

Modern companies are increasingly developing characteristics of virtual organizations. This results in tensions, because virtual networks are less suitable for cooperative, creative, and innovative tasks. Distance creates integration problems, makes coordination more difficult and reduces the ability to learn and innovate. This paper discusses the importance of Internet-based, collaborative applications have for meeting this challenge. With qualitative case studies from three companies that have practical experience with collaborative applications (platforms, wikis, communities), the use will be analysed. The integrative potential of these applications is shown on the basis of four analytical dimensions of distance. Against the background of an understanding of collaboration as the most intensive form of joint efforts, a more recent development is also visible: companies are now endeavouring to make collaboration situations take place more frequently, to extend them over time and to intensify them. This can be seen in the way they conceive the future "digital workplace".... view less
