%X Some years ago the term 'Maya' suffered a metamorphosis in the linguistic practices of Guatemalans. The social configuration of the country has resulted from various events such as armed conflict (1960-1996), the politicization of identities, local changes, & the introduction of international aid, which have favored the use of the category 'Maya,' over indigene, as an important part of the process of change in the interethnic relations of Guatemala. This new usage, referred to here as a 'discursive change,' is examined in terms of its implications for the personal identity of the Maya community.
