Busco comprender el movimiento de 1968 en México desde la perspectiva de sus reivindicaciones democrático-liberales. Explico las causas profundas -las contradicciones sistémicas y el peso del pasado- que propiciaron los errores coyunturales que desembocaron en la matanza de Tlatelolco. Doy cuenta de los esfuerzos de preservación del sistema hegemónico priista, la respuesta neoliberal y la difícil transición a la democracia. I seek to understand the 1968 Mexican movement from the perspective of its liberal- democratic demands. I explain the deep causes -the systemic contradictions and the weight of the past- that favored the short-term errors which in turn led to the Tlatelolco massacre. I offer an account of the efforts to preserve the pri hegemonic system, the neoliberal reaction, and the hard transition to democracy. I reflect on the new period inaugurated by the triumph of López Obrador, its risks and possibilities, under a vision that insists on building citizenship and republican institutions as the only means to strengthen Mexican democracy and to do justice to the liberal-democratic project of the 1968 youth.... view less
