According to the left-Hegelian approach in Critical Theory, the universalistic aspirations of emancipatory reason are constitutively mediated through struggles of subaltern subjects. However, this dialectical relation has been lost out of sight time and again within this tradition. This is also the case in Axel Honneth's theory of recognition, as this essay discusses: Although starting from the pugnacious view point of misrecognized social groups, in Honneth’s theory this sense of conflict is ultimately supplanted by a reformist paradigm of progress. This is problematic, because it exempts from attention the bringing about of those universalistic forms of ethical life that Honneth contradictorily assumes to be already realized in essence. In order to overcome this blind spot, the essay argues for a polemological transformation of Honneth’s theory of recognition that is inspired by radical-democratic conceptions of "counter-hegemony" (Laclau/Mouffe) and "disagreement" (Rancière): Through the lenses of those antagonistic concepts, the partial perspective of subaltern subjectivation becomes visible as the political origin of emancipatory universalism.... view less
