Embryos in a social context? The role of gender-sensitive arguments and of women as actors in the German bioethics debate

'The years 2000 and 2001 in Germany were marked by an extremely intense public debate, which focused on pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, embryonic stem cell research and the Federal Embryo Protection Act. The paper investigates the extent of women's active participation in the debate as well as the extent to which the ethical, legal and social aspects of the new biomedicine were discussed from a gender-sensitive perspective, i.e. to what extent an engendering of the debate took place. The paper concludes that although high participation of women contributed to the process of engendering, it was not sufficient. Moreover, the framing of the problems discussed played an important role: the dominance of a technology-centred frame tended to go hand in hand with a process of dis-engendering.'
