En el artículo 2204 del Tratado de Ubre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN) se tiene previsto la ampliación del pacto comercial a otros países. A pesar de que no se especifica ningún criterio geográfico de selectividad, en principio cualquier país del orbe puede solicitar formalmente su ingreso al TLCAN.
