(Autorenreferat)'Among political science, photographs are widely disregarded as source material. They are either used as simple illustration of an issue or as means of historical proof. Hence, the medium of photography is rarely subject to methodological discussion. This often leads to wrong conclusions or over-interpretations regarding the function of photographs within the context of political science. To avoid these errors, photo analysis will be presented as a method which deals with pictures on the basis of 'visual literacy'. Besides the history of the political usage of photography as medium itself, approaches from epistemology and semiotics will be taken into account which have been developed by Vilem Flusser or Roland Barthes in neighbouring disciplines like philosophy.'
