The article determines the subjectively perceived and actually realised embeddedness of women and men in formal as well as informal networks in cutting-edge research. The emphasis is placed on the question of to what extent one’s own integration can be assessed accurately and whether there are any gender differences. On the one hand, the study refers to findings which indicate that women scholars feel less involved. On the other hand, it makes a methodical contribution by performing a quantitative matching analysis of perceived and actual involvement. The empirical analysis is based on the data of principal investigators in clusters of the Excellence Initiative. Results show that female elite researchers are able to assess their formal embeddedness in academic structures more accurately than men. Moreover, the findings indicate that the general assumption that women are less integrated than men cannot be supported when it comes to cutting-edge research.... view less
