%X Our present understanding of ›identity‹ goes back to psychoanalyst Erik Erikson's concept of ego and group identity. Subject of this article is the analysis of the ›invention‹ of the modern concept of identity by E.H. Erikson in the USA in the 1940s. Erikson theorizes with it a specific experience: "identity" is meant to describe the changed way of social belonging in a society, in which the national correlation cannot be understood in the context of traditions. Not only was the new meaning of the term identity laid down in this conception but the duality of subject and group identity, which has been preserved in the Federal Republic of Germany, was designed.
