Längerfristige Wandlungen in den Strukturen des Güterkonsums weisen in die Richtung einer Anreicherung hauswirtschaftlicher Tätigkeiten mit produktiven und distributiven Funktionen, die früher vom Produktionssystem oder vom öffentlichen Versorgungssystem erbracht wurden.Umweltbelastungen im Verfügungsbereich der Haushalte werden damit zunehmen und stellen Umwelt- und Verbraucherpolitik vor neue Aufgaben. Wege und Probleme einer ökologisch orientierten Verbraucherinformationspolitik werden diskutiert, insbesondere im Hinblick auf Zielkonflikte zwischen Verbraucher- und Umweltpolitik, die wachsende Komplexität hauswirtschaftlicher Enttscheidungsprozesse und soziale Disparitäten in der Versorgung mit Umweltgütern.... view less

Ecological aspects of consumer behaviour and their consequences for consumer information policy. Structural changes in consumption point towards a progressive transfer of certain productive and distributional functions from industry and public services to private households. Four aspects of this trend are discussed: the increasing capitalization of households; the development of household technology; the professionalisation of consumer activities; and the emergence of a "tertiary sector" in household production. As a result, environmental impacts of consumption increase in some areas disproportionately to the welfare contribution of consumers' productive activities. Environmental and consumer policy implications are set forth, particularly with respect to potentially conflicting environmental and consumer policy objectives; an increasing complexity of household decision processes; social disparities in ecologically relevant consumption behavior; and "neutral" versus "political" information strategies.
