Objective: identifying the profile of the family caregiver of dependent elderly in home living, in the city of João Pessoa - PB, according to the socio-demographic characteristics, information regarding the demand for care and support for help to the performance of this care. Method: an epidemiological study in which 52 family caregivers of dependent elderly participated. Data collection was conducted through home interviews. Results: it was verified a predominance of female caregivers, children of the dependent elderly, with an average age of 52-62 years old, living with a partner and with the elderly, they have studied from five to eight years, with little knowledge for performing their function, as well as a deficit of support for care.
