Objective: Comprehend the working process of professionals in Therapeutic Residential Service, their potentialities and limitations in the process of rebuilding the life of the resident outside of a mental hospital. Method: This is a case study, with a qualitative research approach. Results: It was demonstrated a new conception of the object, a large arsenal of instruments based on psychosocial knowledge, and the goal is different from the healing provided by the asylum mode. Discussion: The subject in psychological distress, is now seen as an extended object, an active participant in the process of understanding madness as a different way of relating with the world and belonging to a territory, a family, social group, which enables social insertion according to individual needs. Conclusion: This perception tries to provide a substitute the mental hospitals, for the freedom to walk around on the city, in an attempt to help residents to rebuild their lives outside the asylums.... view less
