This paper explores the public library as a system, looking for contributing to the understanding of its organizational condition. The study starts from the following consideration: the library is a social institution and its organizational setting is oriented to the fulfillment of social targets. The study takes libraries as systems neither deterministic nor closed for which a systemic complex approach is used to create a concept and characterization proposal of the library as a living organism, derived from the historical effort of the systemic differentiation regarding other social organisms, able to socialize and adapt to its environment and transform it, mainly, by means of its self organization and the urgency. El artículo hace una exploración de la biblioteca pública como sistema, buscando con ello contribuir a la comprensión de su condición organizacional. Parte de la consideración de que la biblioteca es una institución social, cuya configuración organizacional está orientada al cumplimiento de fines sociales. La perspectiva desde la cual se considera a la biblioteca en este trabajo, es la de sistema no determinístico, ni cerrado, para lo cual se acoge una sistémica compleja, desde la que se hace una propuesta de conceptuación y caracterización de la biblioteca como un organismo vivo, producto del esfuerzo histórico de diferenciación sistémica respecto de otros organismos sociales, capaz de socializarse, de adaptarse al medio y de intervenir en él, mediante, principalmente, la auto organización y la emergencia.
