(Autorenreferat)... view less

"Occasionally it has been emphasized that the public is an important factor for social movement mobilization. However, this insight hardly resulted in elaborated theoretical reflection and empirical research. Whereas concepts of framing and political opportunity structure at least indirectly refer to the role of the public, interaction theory allows to take into account systematically mass media and its audience as important reference groups of social movements. Although social movements need public resonance and support in order to influence political decision-making and social change, they refer to the public in very different ways, depending on the type of movement, the movement's developmental phase, target groups, properties of countergroups and srategic preferences of the actors involved. These diffences are hypothetically stated by contrasting old vs. new, power-oriented v. culture-oriented and left-wing vs. right-wing movements." (author's abstract)... view less
