Online-Kommunikation im Lichte deliberativer Theorie: ein forschungsleitendes Modell zur Analyse von Online-Diskussionen

Abstract

Der Beitrag entwickelt ein Modell zur empirischen Analyse von Online-Kommunikation. Auf der Basis der geteilten Annahmen deliberativer Theorien werden die Zusammenhänge zwischen den idealisierten Voraussetzungen der Öffentlichkeit (institutionelle Inputs), dem voraussetzungsreichen Deliberationsprozess (kommunikativer Throughput) und den daraus resultierenden Ergebnissen (produktive Outcomes) theoretisch abgeleitet, für Onlinekontexte angepasst und um Erkenntnisse der empirischen Deliberationsforschung ergänzt. Eine erste Erprobung des Modells bestätigt dessen praktische Anwendbarkeit. Die inhaltsanalytische Auswertung von 435 Kommentaren einer Online-Debatte zur Neufassung einer Promotionsordnung sowie die Befragung von 230 Teilnehmern zeigt, dass unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen (institutionelle Inputs) eine hochwertige Debatte entstehen kann (kommunikativer Throughput), die die von der Theorie skizzierten Ergebnisse (produktive Outcomes) von Deliberation hervorbringt.

This paper develops and tests a framework for the empirical analysis of online deliberation. The framework adopts a comprehensive perspective on online deliberation by considering three levels of deliberation: the institutional design fostering deliberation (institutional input level), the standards of the communication process itself (communicative throughput level) and the expected benefits of deliberation (productive outcome level). Applying the framework to a case study illustrates that it is workable for empirical research. Analyzing 435 comments and an online survey completed by 230 participants, the case study on the online deliberation of new PhD-guidelines shows that if deliberative standards at the institutional input level are met, there is considerable deliberative quality at the level of communicative throughput and theoretical expected outcomes could emerge.
