"New ideas on fatherhood and fathering are gaining relevance in the context of changes which social understandings of masculinity are currently undergoing. Based on these insights, this article analyzes the subject position of the father as a masculinity construction within discussions on fathers' parental leave from a discourse theoretical perspective. The contrariness and ruptures which are uncovered at the discursive level are investigated by focusing on the symbolic tensions between gainful employment and fathering. It is argued that these disparities should be interpreted as ambivalence, with the subject of the father being based on an ambivalent masculinity construction." (author's abstract)... view less
