"Taking into account the current debate about professionalization, this article provides an historical overview of the job profile of (female) educators (in Germany). Since the beginnings of institutional childcare, looking after young children has been considered a task for women. Although Froebel's philosophy to enhance professionalization in the field of early childhood education and care was adopted by the bourgeois women's movement, it already failed one hundred years ago at the school conference of the German Reich. Since then various opportunities have been missed to strengthen the field of early childhood education and care and to systematically make it an integral part of the education system - including the most recent efforts which aimed to redefine and reestimate qualification requirements and tasks of staff working in early childhood education and care."
