The definition of culture: an application-oriented overhaul

Abstract

Stefanie Rathje setzt in ihrer Kritik am traditionellen Kulturkonzept und dessen Kohärenzpostulat den Kollektivbegriff ebenfalls als Differenzierungsmittel ein: In der Unterscheidung von Kollektiv und Kultur einerseits und Individualität und Pluralität andererseits, entwickelt sie eine Vier-Felder-Matrix, mit der sich sowohl das Kohärenz-Paradigma überwinden, als auch eine präzise Beschreibung der kulturellen Gegebenheiten vornehmen lässt. Letzteres macht sie anhand konkreter Praxisbeispiele und aktueller Anwendungsbezüge deutlich.

This article revisits traditional definitions of culture to establish a sound criticism of existing coherence-based approaches. By expanding the one-dimensional concept of culture to a four-field-matrix, a likewise contemporary and practical concept of culture is formulated which is also likely to supply rea- sonable answers to disputed questions regarding the formation of cohesion in society. It is finally argued that the prevalent diagnosis of multicollectivity should be expanded to a desideratum of radical multicollectivity, the goal of providing increasing individual access to ever more collectives, leading to an increase in both social stability and developmental dynamics.
