Gefangen im Container: Kulturvergleiche und ihre räumliche Vorbestimmung am Beispiel des Filmes "Willkommen bei den Sch'tis"

Abstract

Der Autor demonstriert die Bedeutung, aber auch die Probleme gängiger räumlicher Kategorisierungen in der kulturvergleichenden Forschung. Angesichts gewichtiger Kritikpunkte überlegt er, inwieweit Kulturvergleiche ohne Raum auskommen können oder diesen gerade zur Überwindung der Probleme benötigen. Er zeigt zudem, dass der Nutzen und die Gültigkeit eines Kulturvergleichs stets kontextgebunden sind und plädiert für Kulturvergleiche mit variablem Raumbezug.

In the field of intercultural studies, scholars usually revert to spatial, oftentimes national borders and units. As a logical result of prior definitions of the cultural object to be compared, collectivities thus appear as clearly defined and separated. With time, this placing of cultural characteristics within the same borders leads to a hardening of cultural-spatial units that must be considered problematical. Leaving this and consequences like the over-emphasizing of national differences and the perpetuation of stereotypes aside, it is mainly the loss of insight which provides the argument against the inflexible use of spatial concepts of comparison in the field of intercultural studies. The French hit movie "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis" is here presented for illustrating these problems as well as for offering alternatives.
