"The ageing society is increasingly drawing attention to how work can be reconciled with care work. Rising numbers of frail elderly and the challenge of providing nursing care are closely connected to the debate around gender equality. From a theoretical point of view, care-giving relatives need a 'right to care' as well as a 'right not to care'. This addresses the key questions of gender equality on the labour market, the gender division of labour within the family and the organisation of care involving the state, the market and the family. The article analyses which instruments and measures successfully help to reconcile work and care work, and discusses the impact of public policies and companies' social policies on carers."
