Review: Michael Dellwing & Robert Prus (2012). Einführung in die interaktionistische Ethnografie: Soziologie im Außendienst

Abstract

Mit dieser 'Einführung in die interaktionistische Ethnografie' haben Dellwing und Prus ein Lehrbuch vorgelegt, das StudentInnen und Universitätslehrenden eine Einführung und Anleitung in eine Form der Ethnografie bereitstellt, die aufgrund der Dominanz von phänomenologisch geprägten Ansätzen in der deutschsprachigen Ethnografie eine relativ geringe Bedeutung haben. Das Buch beginnt mit einer kompetenten und verständlichen Erläuterung der analytischen Ausgangspunkte der interaktionistischen Ethnografie, die durch eine Pluralität von Perspektiven und die Notwendigkeit der Aus- und Verhandlung von "Definitionen der Situation" charakterisiert sind. Die Autoren wenden sich dann in den verbleibenden Kapiteln der praktischen Durchführung interaktionistischer Ethnografien zu, wobei ihre Darstellung den Zugang zum Feld, Beobachtungen im Feld und die systematische Herstellung von Feldnotizen genauso einschließt wie das Verschriftlichen der Ethnografien zur Einreichung als Dissertation oder Seminararbeit bzw. als Veröffentlichung in sozialwissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften und Büchern. Das Buch ist EthnografInnen und Studierenden zu empfehlen, die einen fundierten Einblick in die Forschungspraxis der interaktionistischen Ethnografie suchen.

Dellwing and Prus's "Introduction to Interactionist Ethnography" is a textbook that offers (university) students and teachers an introduction to and instruction on how to conduct ethnographic studies using interactionist concepts and techniques. With their focus on the interactionist approach to ethnography, Dellwing and Prus differ from the phenomenological approaches that pervade German ethnography. The book begins with a competent and very readable explanation of the analytic basis of interactionist ethnography that is characterized by a plurality of perspectives and the need for negotiations about the 'definition of the situation.'
