Abstract

(Autorenreferat)... view less

"According to self-control theory (Gottfredson and Hirschi 1990), neglect of longterm disadvantages in decision-making (i.e. low self-control) is the major cause of criminal and delinquent acts. Previous measures of self-control, such as the scale of Grasmick et al. (1993), however, do not tap into this theoretically proposed mechanism. This study proposes new measures of self-control, assessing self-control as a future-related construct. In line with recent conceptualizations of low self-control by the authors of the theory and orienting towards newer developments in the measurement of present-orientation, the authors differentiate between the ability to consider long-term damage when making decisions (impulsivity) and the motivation to take long-term consequences into account (discounting). Their results reveal satisfactory construct validity. The new scales predict the consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana better than the Grasmick scale. The results of this study are critically discussed and potential benefits of the new scales for further applications are outlined." (author's abstract)... view less
