'Germany' s political, economic and cultural relations with its Slavic neighbours immediately to the east - the Czech Republic and Poland - are now better than ever before. At the same time we can observe a steady growth in mutual criticism, accusations, misunderstandings, affairs and the like which point to a surprisingly negative mood among these nieghbours, in particular between the Czechs and Germans. The present two-part report examines this unusual discrepancy between positive political results and verbal discord in the bilateral relations between these countries. This report is based on generally accessible sources, primarily of Czech and Polish origin, and seeks to document the discord, estimate its potential political impact and analyse its origins with respect to historical experience and current 'sensitivites' in the countries concerned.'
